I found my interest in design when I was 15 years old. It was my first workshop class and it was about making a simple lightbox using the template and materials they provide. As the workshop course continues, I realised that everything we use was designed by someone, even as little as a pencil we use. I discovered CAD (SolidWork) during the course as we were asked to follow the template and build it on SolidWorks. My designer's life begins here as I decided to follow this path.
If there's anyone that inspired me, it would be Steve Jobs. What he achieved in his life inspired me as I realise that he designed something that everybody knows and most people uses it. It opened up my eyes and made me realise that maybe one day I would be able to design something everyone knows and everyone uses. Tony Fadell is another one that inspired me for where to look when designing a product. "As a product designer, it's my job to see those everyday things". He uses a fruit sticker and windshield wiper as an example of everyday product design which is a very helpful thing to know for designing the product for everyone.
Playing computer games is my daily routine since I was little. As I get older, I realise that designing games could potentially be more exciting and interesting than playing games. Now I'm actually doing a design course at the University of Auckland, I feel like I'm one step closer to become a game designer.
I'm interested in all kinds of designs that are out there in the world, but there are design areas that are much closer to me such as product design, game design, etc... Those are the design areas that I have access to in des100 and des101, which I would definitely take advantage of, and learned as much as could for the rest of the course.
For the future, I have not decided what kind of designer I would like to be, there is so much more to explore and I'm not ready to make the decision. For short term goal, I would like to explore the game design, VR design, product design, and industrial design as these are the areas that I think it's more relatable to me.
